Why pixels, not characters

Google cuts titles when they run out of horizontal space. In 20px Arial, a lowercase “i” is about 4 pixels wide and a capital “W” nearly 19, so “Illinois oil filling” fits far more characters than “WOMEN'S WARM WOOL MITTENS”. That is why a 58-character title can be cut while a 64-character one isn't. The meter above measures your actual text in the browser with the same font.

What makes a snippet earn the click

  • Lead with the thing searched. Put the primary keyword in the first half of the title so it survives truncation and gets bolded.
  • Promise one concrete outcome. “Fix rust in 10 minutes” beats “Everything about cast iron”.
  • Brand last, if at all. Google often adds your site name above the title already.
  • Descriptions are ad copy. They don't directly affect rankings, but they do affect whether someone chooses you over the result above.

Questions people ask

How long should a title tag be?

Google truncates desktop titles by pixel width, roughly 580–600 pixels, which is usually 50–60 characters. Wide letters like W and M use more space than i or l, which is why a pixel check beats a character count.

How long should a meta description be?

Desktop snippets typically show around 920 pixels, about 150–160 characters; mobile shows a little more text on two to three lines. Google often rewrites descriptions anyway, so write for the searcher first and keep the key point early.

Does Google always use my title and description?

No. Google says it may rewrite titles and generate snippets from page content when it thinks that better matches the query. A clear, accurate title that matches the H1 is most likely to be kept.

How accurate is this SERP preview?

It measures text in Arial, the font Google uses for results, with the same pixel limits most SEO tools use. Google changes its layout often, so treat the cut-off as a close guide, not a guarantee.

Is my text sent anywhere?

No. The preview is computed in your browser. Your last inputs are remembered in local storage so you can come back to them.
