Keyword search volume
Search volume has to come from search data, and we don't have any. So this page does two honest things: shows where real volumes live, and turns the numbers you bring into a ranked shortlist.
Where real search volume comes from
| Source | What you get | Catch |
|---|---|---|
| Google Keyword Planner | Monthly volume from Google Ads data | Free with a Google Ads account; ranges unless you run ads; close variants are merged. |
| Google Search Console | Your real impressions and clicks per query | Free; only queries you already appear for; the most trustworthy numbers you will get. |
| Google Trends | Relative interest, 0–100, over time and by region | Free; great for seasonality and comparing terms; no absolute volumes. |
| Ahrefs · Semrush · Moz | Modelled monthly volume, difficulty, SERP data | Paid plans; limited free lookups; each tool's estimates differ. |

Paste keyword, volume, difficulty, one per line (tabs from a spreadsheet work too; difficulty is optional). Then set business value for each row.
The example uses illustrative numbers only, to show the arithmetic.
Reading search volume without fooling yourself
- It's an annual average. “Christmas jumper” averages out to a modest number and then spikes in December. Check Google Trends before you plan around a monthly figure.
- Variants are merged. Keyword Planner often reports the same number for singular, plural and misspelled versions. Don't add them up.
- Volume isn't traffic. Even the top result gets only a share of clicks, and featured snippets, ads and AI answers take more. A page ranking for a whole cluster usually earns more than one head term suggests.
- Zero isn't zero. Tools under-count rare phrases. Search Console regularly shows impressions for queries every tool lists at 0–10.
Questions people ask
Can I check keyword search volume for free?
Yes, within limits. Google Keyword Planner is free with a Google Ads account but shows broad ranges (such as 1K–10K) unless the account is spending. Google Search Console shows exact impressions for queries your site already appears for. Google Trends shows relative interest over time, not absolute numbers. Ahrefs and Semrush show estimated monthly volumes on paid plans, with limited free lookups.
Why doesn't KeywordForge show search volume?
We don't license Google Ads or click-stream data, and we won't display numbers we can't source. Paste volumes from a real tool here and the prioritiser does the ranking work.
How accurate is keyword search volume?
All third-party volumes are estimates, usually a 12-month average, and Google Keyword Planner groups close variants together. Treat volume as an order of magnitude: the difference between 50 and 5,000 matters; the difference between 1,300 and 1,600 usually doesn't.
How does the priority score work?
Score = √volume × business value ÷ (1 + difficulty ÷ 25). The square root stops one huge keyword from drowning out everything else, business value (1–3) is your call on whether the traffic can convert, and difficulty (optional, from any tool) discounts keywords that will take longer to rank.
Is low-volume keyword worth targeting?
Often, yes. Tools under-report the long tail, a single page ranks for many related phrases, and low-volume buying queries can be worth more than high-volume curiosity ones.
