Anatomy of a description that gets clicked
- Echo the query. Google bolds words that match the search, which draws the eye.
- Say what's on the page, specifically. “Step-by-step photos, a printable checklist and fixes for sticky seasoning” beats “Learn all about cast iron”.
- Give one reason to choose you. Free, tested, updated, local, no sign-up: whatever is true.
- End with a soft next step. See, compare, get, try. Not “click here”.
Keep it honest. A description that promises what the page doesn't deliver gets the click and then the bounce. Google may also stop using descriptions it finds inaccurate.
Questions people ask
Do meta descriptions affect rankings?
Not directly. Google has said the meta description is not a ranking factor. It is still worth writing, because it is often the text under your title in the results, and a clear one can win the click.
How long should a meta description be?
Aim for roughly 140–155 characters (up to about 920 pixels) so the key point shows on desktop. Put the most important words first in case Google cuts it.
Why does Google show a different description?
Google generates snippets from page content when it thinks another passage answers the query better. Descriptions that accurately summarise the page and include the main topic are more likely to be used.
Should every page have a unique meta description?
Yes, for pages that matter. Duplicate descriptions give Google no reason to use them. For huge sites, Google's documentation suggests generating descriptions programmatically from page data rather than duplicating one.
Is this meta description generator free?
Yes. Six drafts per request, written by a language model through Vercel AI Gateway, with length checks and a Google preview in your browser. There is a fair-use limit per visitor.
